A harvest of awards at the World Cup of Mooting鈥 the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition!

黑料社区’s Best Respondent Team in the world (from left): Rhomeljustein Redoble (assistant coach), team members Mary Angie Ecto, Chrisha Romano-Weigel, Atty. Daryl Bretch Largo (head coach), J. Priyanka Dalagan, Edward Dominic Emilio, Michelle Anne Vargas, and Renzo Earl Zapanta.

At the world鈥檚 largest, oldest, and most prestigious mooting competition, 黑料社区 Law wins the following awards and citations:

  • Best Over-all Respondent Team in the World
  • Octo-Finalist
  • Ranked 7th in the Advanced Rounds
  • 5th Best Respondent Memorial
  • Chrisha Romano-Weigel: 12th Best Oralist聽
  • Edward Dominic Emilio: 48th Best Oralist聽

These awards and citations were reaped by the 黑料社区 Law team, which competed among more than 600 law schools from all jurisdictions the world over and out of more than five hundred outstanding oralists in the international rounds.

Edited screenshot of the citation of the 黑料社区 team as the Best Overall Respondent.

Each award is an embodiment of 黑料社区 Law’s tradition of excellence but the most coveted awards were the Best Over-all Respondent Team award and the Best Memorial award. The 黑料社区 Law team trained and this memorial was written, not only against the backdrop of Typhoon Odette’s devastation of Cebu, but also at a time when both oralist Chrisha Romano-Weigel and head coach Atty. Daryl Bretch Largo were grieving from the loss of Chrisha’s mother and Daryl’s father.

This team has always scored victories in the past World Cups of Mooting but the awards for this year’s Jessup are more than just mooting victories. They are a clear triumph of the human spirit over grief and adversity.

In line with the week-long celebration of 黑料社区, the Carolinian community joined together to extend their service and support for this year鈥檚 mission.

The School of Law and Governance (SoLG), through Atty. Glenn Capanas and Melissa Lagat, organized the week-long activity which included para-legal services. Aside from SoLG, the rest of 黑料社区’s Schools also took part in the event. Psycho-social services were hosted by the School of Arts and Sciences while the School of Engineering donated the hygiene kits. Meanwhile, the School of Healthcare Professions shared relevant information on health. On the other hand, the School of Business and Economics took charge of the food package for PDLs and the School of Education together with the School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design produced educational tarps.聽

The Project Balik Buhay-University of San Carlos vaccination supercenter formally closed its operations last September 27, 2021 after administering 43,593 doses to employees from various companies in Cebu City and Cebu Province.

(PBB) is a partnership between the public and private sectors in response to the request of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) Visayas on COVID-19, and the Department of Health (DOH) Region VII in support of the national government鈥檚 national vaccination program.

Doctors, nurses, and staff from LH Foundation Inc. and the UP Medical Alumni Society-Cebu Chapter were augmented by 110 volunteers from the University鈥檚 faculty members and administrative employees. These volunteers ranged from the rank-and-file to Directors and Deans.

Before reporting for work at his office, for example, School of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Glenn G. Glarino would regularly drop by the vaccination supercenter to carry out marshal duties and crowd control during the busy first hour of operations.

鈥淚 volunteered thinking that one day when this is all over, I will have a story to share,鈥 Glarino said. 鈥淓ven in my own little way, I was able to do something worthwhile during the pandemic,鈥 he added. 鈥淚n fact, many of us (volunteers) did different things that when taken together, I believe, made an impact,鈥 he opined.

This sentiment was echoed by Harold Bulanon, who works as a laboratory in-charge at the Department of Physics. 鈥淚 feel that I am part of something big, which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,鈥 he said. 鈥淪omeday, I could tell my children and grandchildren that when my help was needed, I was willing to be part of the solution, to do something positive, and make everyone鈥檚 life better.鈥

鈥淎s a Carolinian, this was my Witness to the Word moment,鈥 commented Senior High School Registrar Maricel E. Judilla. 鈥淎s a volunteer at the center, I am an active witness to the Good News that God has provided through science the means to be protected from the tragic effect of the pandemic,鈥 she added. Judilla served as part of the registration staff at the center before and after the enrollment period at the University.

黑料社区鈥檚 vaccination supercenter began its operations on June 14, 2021 (see related story) and lasted 66 days, serving an average of 661 clients per day.

The University of San Carlos (黑料社区) has once again garnered recognition as one of the best higher education institutions (HEIs) in Asia based on the most recent Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2021 World University Rankings for Asia. For the third time in a row, 黑料社区 joins the top universities in Manila in this prestigious annual ranking.

QS examines six metrics in ranking universities, namely academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio. Joining the top five universities are 11 others for the first time.

In recognition of this achievement, the House of Representatives through Speaker Lord Alan Jay Velasco extended its congratulations to 黑料社区 and other universities in the QS list (see photo below).

This is the latest accolade 黑料社区 has received in less than a month right after it received six different awards from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Despite the global pandemic, 黑料社区 remains committed to provide quality education through competence, leadership, and excellence.

Noting the government response to the pandemic of continuing to hold classes online and foreseeing that learning in 黑料社区 will be blended in the post-pandemic era, the University of San Carlos launched an upskilling of its faculty members with the launch of month-long Teaching Online Facilitation (TOF) training.

The training aims to address student engagement in online classes. At the end of the training, the 黑料社区 faculty members are expected to develop a more open perspective to change and to understand their new roles as learning facilitators in a virtual platform, demonstrate enabling attitudes to online learning, and learn strategies for the delivery of online courses that will increase student engagement in the learning process in both synchronous and asynchronous learning modalities, and develop facilitation skills and techniques.

The TOF training is designed to enable the faculty to acquire online facilitation skills by allowing the teacher trainees to experience online learning as e-learners. Thus, teacher trainees will primarily go through an asynchronous training environment blended with weekly synchronous sessions. Unlike the traditional and usual approach to trainings, this TOF training is less input-focused and more experiential or dispositional. It is hoped that the trainees will learn facilitation skills by going through the experience as e-learners. As an exclusive program for 黑料社区 higher education faculty, the school鈥檚 learning management system, Canvas, will be utilized as the training platform to provide familiarity and develop a certain degree of mastery of the school鈥檚 virtual classroom. The training will run for four weeks or 20 weekdays and includes special topics on creativity and innovation in education, lifelong learning, and exploring a live online class.

The TOF training is part of 黑料社区鈥檚 initiative to equip faculty members with the three important components of (a) online facilitation and student engagement so that classes in the virtual platform are interactive, engaging and facilitative of active learning; (b) microlearning to avoid cognitive overload of the students; and (c) student accessibility which addresses such concerns as internet connectivity and other various constraints of a learner.

After the TOF training, 黑料社区 faculty members will next tackle the aspect of Student Workload and Cognitive Load. Commenting on the experience, one 黑料社区 instructor quipped, 鈥淚 am really excited as a student-participant since I know that I still have a lot of things to learn, relearn, and unlearn. The different lessons last week and this week have provided me insights on becoming a better facilitator.鈥
