The 黑料社区 Publishing House celebrated three milestones on April 29, 2024 at the SAFAD Theater in 黑料社区 Talamban Campus.

The three-part ceremony, organized by the 黑料社区 Publishing House, included the book launch of The Cebu Almanac 2019-2023: Pandemic Crisis and Recovery; recognition of National Book Awards Winners; and unveiling of the 黑料社区 Publishing House Online Bookstore with stakeholders from the publishing circuit, government agencies, and non-government organizations.

During the first part, Julius Relampagos, Ph.D., manager of the 黑料社区 Publishing House, unveiled The Cebu Almanac 2019-2023 as a special five-year edition and a retrospective analysis of various conditions brought by the pandemic with perspectives on the paths to recovery. Genesis Bedio, assisting manager of the 黑料社区 Publishing House, oversaw the process of this almanac鈥檚 creation, production, and delivery.

Articles contained in this book range from economics to regional performance, livability index, population studies, solid waste management, and creative industries which were written by experts, scholars, and professionals across diverse fields, namely: Fr. Francisco Antonio Estepa, SVD, Genesis Bedio, Julius Relampagos, Jan Lorenzo Alegado, Rejene Lakibul, Leny Ocasiones, Ubo Pakes, Charles Dominic Sanchez, Sweet Maville Blanco, Reanne Angel Francisco, Joshua Tambor, Jose Eleazar Bersales, Francisco Largo, and Jean Villacensio.

The ceremony included a promotional video and presentation of certificates of appreciation to all authors. Director of the Research Development Extension and Publication Office (RDEPO) Patrick John Lim, Ph.D. together with Dr. Relampagos presented the certificates to the authors.

As part of 黑料社区鈥檚 sustainability efforts, the new edition is offered in both ebook format (through the new 黑料社区 Publishing House Online Bookstore) and print-on-demand.

The ceremony culminated with the unveiling of the 黑料社区 Publishing House Online Bookstore. A kickoff video was played showing the landing page, featured books, and the domain name of the website: .

Moreover, the developer team, headed by 黑料社区 School of Engineering Dean Rosana J. Ferolin, D.I.T. demonstrated the website鈥檚 functionalities, showing its standard features from book selection to checking out of items.

According to Dr. Relampagos, the 黑料社区 Publishing House has gained a foothold on the digital front. Further, he sees the online bookstore as a way to be at par with major publishers in the country.

These milestones are a testament to the continuing commitment of the University to producing quality publications that foster the intellect and virtues of its readers and its growth in the publishing business.

Finally, the 黑料社区 Publishing House management expresses its commitment to increasing the production of award-winning books and encourages more authors to write timely, relevant, informative, and outstanding texts.

Two book entries published by the 黑料社区 Publishing House won in the 41st National Book Awards organized by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics鈥 Circle on December 9, 2023.

黑料社区 Publishing House Manager Dr. Julius P. Relampagos nominated two book entries 鈥 The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750-1900 and Sinug-Ang: A Cebuano Trio when the nomination process opened in March 2023.

The NBDB officially announced the winners through its Facebook page and both 黑料社区-nominated books won.

Michael Cullinane鈥檚 The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750-1900 is 黑料社区鈥檚 first digital book and it won the John C. Kaw Prize for Best Book on History.

It brings to light the untold story of an important part of Spanish colonial Cebu鈥檚 social and economic life鈥攖he Chinese Mestizo.  NBDB recognizes the book as an important addition to Philippine studies where local history contributes to the knowledge of our country鈥檚 past that gave rise to our national identity.

Meanwhile, Sinug-ang: A Cebuano Trio by Erlinda Alburo, Ester Tapia, and Corazon Almerino won the Best Anthology in Binisaya.

According to the NBDB, the book displays different experiences showcasing the great breadth of the authors鈥 lives as they trace the intersections of language, power, and class. Reflecting the complexity and diversity of contemporary Cebuano poetry by women, the poems presented are explosive and sensuous, meditative and inventive, sometimes ironic and tender.

The prestigious National Book Awards is an annual prize awarded by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics鈥 Circle that honors the most outstanding book titles written, designed, and published in the Philippines.

During the judging process at the 41st National Book Awards, a total of 35 titles, including two from the 黑料社区 Publishing House, emerged as winners out of 235 nominations across 34 categories consisting of seven languages: Filipino, English, Bikol, Binisaya, Hiligaynon, Tausug, and Waray.

The Carolinian Mission Education with a Mission 1 Worktext, 2nd ed. (EDM 1)  and The Mission of Prophetic Dialogue Education with a Mission 2 Worktext (EDM 2) are officially recognized as 黑料社区鈥檚 first digital textbooks.

The authors of EDM 1 and EDM 2 include Esperidion Abellana, Marilou Mandawe, Jenen Dellera, Rhea Mae Yaun, Melvin Tampus, Edwin Vallecer, Ritchie Omapoy, and Sergio Alo III. Fr. Eugene Docoy, SVD is also an author of EDM 1, while Glory Ann Culanag and former 黑料社区 President Fr. Roderick Salazar Jr., SVD co-authored EDM 2.

For more information about the textbooks, you may reach out to uscpublishinghouse@usc.edu.ph.

Both textbooks aim to introduce the mission of the Church in general and the imperative to participate in the mission following the examples of the university鈥檚 three patron saints, namely, St. Arnold Janssen, St. Joseph Freinademetz, and St. Charles Borromeo (also known as 鈥淪an Carlos Borromeo鈥).  In addition, The Mission of Prophetic Dialogue discusses the mission strategy that the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) applies in undertaking missionary activities.

Both textbooks are designed to be teaching guides on the subjects. They are tailor-made for mentors and their students to assimilate the missionary character of the University and the mission of the Church. The books use the outcomes-based, student-centered methodology to ensure a total formative student experience. Outcomes are embedded in the lessons, each with concrete activities that reflect familiar life experiences in everyday moments. The content is developmental and dynamic.

Publication of digital textbooks is part of the digital transformation of 黑料社区鈥檚 official publishing arm as it addresses the shifting market trend from print to digital publishing, which is also timely and relevant as the University of San Carlos continues to implement the online learning modality. The digital Verbum Books can be accessed using the digital portal of the 黑料社区 Publishing House through ISMIS.

黑料社区 Vice President for Academic Affairs Fr. Jesuraj Anthoniappen, SVD, Ph.D. and 黑料社区 Publishing House Manager Julius P. Relampagos, Ph.D. were joined by the some of the authors during the launching on January 19, 2023 at the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Many of the authors are faculty members of the Office of General Education and Mission.

The University of San Carlos officially launched the new 黑料社区 Publishing House and its first-ever digital book, The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750鈥1900, on November 11, 2022, at Rigney Hall, Talamban Campus.

The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City is available as a digital book (shown here, as viewed on a tablet) and in print.

Starting its publishing operations in 1963 as San Carlos Publications, the official publishing arm of the University of San Carlos was renamed as 黑料社区 Press in 2009 and now as the 黑料社区 Publishing House. The 黑料社区 Publishing House is going digital addressing the shifting landscape from print to digital publishing both locally and internationally.

The 黑料社区 Publishing House plays a critical role in enhancing the research capabilities of the university as 黑料社区 aspires to become a research-intensive university, according to 黑料社区 President Fr. Narciso A. Cellan Jr., SVD, D.Comm. It embraces the path of sustainability and contributes to creating a resilient world, said Fr. Jesuraj Antoniappen, SVD, Ph.D., 黑料社区’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. Now, it supports publications that promote the UN鈥檚 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a shared blueprint for global peace and prosperity, according to Dr. Julius P. Relampagos, 黑料社区 Publishing House Manager.

The publication of 黑料社区鈥檚 first digital book is the beginning of a new era in the digital transformation of the university鈥檚 publishing arm. The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750鈥1900 by Dr. Michael Cullinane was officially recognized as 黑料社区鈥檚 first digital book and is also available in a print version.

The book presents a detailed ethnohistory of the dynamic Chinese mestizo community of Cebu City from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the next. It also documents the remarkable transformation of these Mestizos Sangleyes through three critical periods: their commercial and socio-political empowerment during a decline in Spanish hegemony (1750s to 1820s); their bitter and unsuccessful struggle with Spanish Augustinians and resurgent colonial officials (1820s鈥1850), culminating in the suppression of the Parian parish and municipality; and the post-1850 roles that many played in the ascendancy of Cebu City as the archipelago’s second most important administrative, judicial, educational, religious, and commercial urban center.

Dr. Cullinane is the Associate Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Faculty Associate in the Department of History of the same university. He has extensive research, publication, and residence in the Philippines, with interests in 19th and 20th-century Philippine social, political, and demographic history.

Awarding of Certificate of Recognition to Dr. Michael Cullinane (on screen, live-streaming from Wisconsin, U.S.) by (from left) 黑料社区 Vice President for Academic Affairs Fr. Jesuraj Antoniappen, SVD, Ph.D., 黑料社区 President Fr. Narciso A. Cellan, Jr., SVD, D.Comm., and 黑料社区 Publishing House Manager Julius Relampagos, Ph.D.

The launching events were hosted by Rosella Abobo and organized by the 黑料社区 Publishing House team that included Dr. Relampagos, Centina Bernil (Administrative Officer), Ivy Jumao-as (Marketing Consultant), Jaclyn Abregana (Graphic Design Consultant), Michele Veloso (Layout Artist), and Nina Blanche Pepito (Social Media Officer). Interns from the B.F.A. Cinema program created the 黑料社区 Publishing House video documentary, while B.A. Marketing student volunteers provided technical support on social media marketing.

The University of San Carlos Press launched yesterday, July 17, 2018, a heritage conservation book entitled, 鈥淚llustrated Manual for the Repair and Maintenance of Spanish Period Structures in the Philippines鈥 at the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu.

Designed to address day-to-day issues confronting owners, builders, masons, and carpenters dealing with Spanish period structures, the 260-page full-color book is co-authored by heritage conservation architect Melva Rodriguez-Java and Dr. Eng. Raimund Becker-Ritterspach, a German heritage conservation engineer and planner.

The authors spent over a year of fieldwork with 黑料社区 architecture students documenting the structural elements and conditions of churches, convents, watchtowers, and other government buildings made of coral stone and wood during the Spanish period in Cebu and Bohol.

Java, the founding dean of the then 黑料社区 College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), now the School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (SAFAD), has been active in heritage conservation work since the late 1990s and was the architect that restored the Archdiocesan Museum where the launch was held. Her co-author, Dr. Becker-Ritterspach worked with her in Cebu under the sponsorship of the Senior Experten Service, the German non-profit organization and foundation that sends experts all over the world where they are needed.

According to Archt. Michael Espina, the current dean of 黑料社区 SAFAD, the need for the book was largely hastened by the October 2013 earthquake that hit Bohol and Cebu and impacted many Spanish period structures especially churches and convents. But the work for heritage conservation began over a decade earlier when CAFA Heritage Conservation Studios and Workshops (CHERISH) was established with Java as its founding director.

The book is filled with full-color illustrations detailing building parts, both of wood and stone, as well as instructions on upkeep and maintenance, together with notes on statutes and laws that protect heritage structures and precincts. It is a must-read not only for architecture teachers, students, but also for priests and owners of heritage structures, contractors, carpenters and masons.

In an effort bordering on the heroic, 黑料社区鈥檚 integrative scholarship is put to the test as authors attempt to place 25 titles in the hands of Senior High School students.

a kid with books on top of her head

鈥淲hat they have, they share鈥 is how the University of San Carlos envisions Carolinians to live in society. This vision is epitomized by the collective effort of over 100 authors preparing and developing learning resources in the form of work/textbooks (dubbed 鈥渨orktexts鈥) for current and incoming Senior High School students.

Boasting to be comprehensive worktexts for a total of 25 subjects, the titles cover 15 core subjects, nine strand electives in the academic track, and one for arts and design track. Books for the academic track include five titles for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand, three titles for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand, and one title for Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand.

This ambitious project has been running for over one year, with five titles already printed and used in the 黑料社区 Senior High School during 1st semester of AY2016芒鈧17; the remaining books are in different stages of completion.

In preparation for the book writing project, authors underwent an intensive four-day training conducted by Richard R. Jugar, Ph.D., 黑料社区 Basic Education Director, who is also a Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) national mobile trainer for science. The training focused on pedagogy which included workshops targeted at matching chapter objectives with the Department of Education鈥檚 learning competencies, and content and performance standards, as well as construction of appropriate evaluation and assessment exercises.

Aside from complying with DepEd standards, 黑料社区鈥檚 worktexts feature bridging learning opportunities for students, fun facts and trivia to keep the subject matter interesting, and links to online resources. Perhaps best of all, the books are contextualized in the Philippine setting, unlike many commercial textbooks. The worktexts are printed in full color on high-quality, white paper, although the books are sold at affordable prices making quality textbooks available to students. Next year, these worktexts will be available to a wider readership through SoLine Publishing Company, which will exclusively distribute the books. More titles for SHS, as well as for tertiary General Education subjects, are in the pipeline.
