The University of San Carlos () marked a meaningful milestone on September 3, 2025, as Ericzon B. Sola formalized his generous support for aspiring scholars through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held at the Talamban Campus.

The partnership, facilitated by the Office of Alumni Affairs, Scholarships, and Job Placement headed by Ar. Margret Rosario, M.T.E., FUAP, ensures that more deserving students will have access to financial assistance under the Scientia-Virtus-Devotio Student Financial Assistance Program.

From left: Ar. Margret Rosario, Fr. Francisco Antonio Estepa, SVD, Ericzon B. Sola, Jaime P. Barde, and Atty. Joan S. Largo.

The story behind this partnership is as unexpected as it is inspiring. While visiting Cebu, Mr. Sola was initially looking for an orphanage to sponsor. By chance, he met Elizabeth M. Remedio, former manager of the Office of Naming Rights, Endowment, and Sponsorship (ONES), at a coffee shop and a simple conversation soon led to a meaningful collaboration.

During their discussion, Mr. Sola shared that he has several established businesses in Palawan, but many of his employees lacked access to proper education. He expressed hope that through this partnership, could help provide quality education to future scholars—individuals who may someday contribute to communities like his.

Present during the MOA signing were President Fr. Francisco Antonio Estepa, SVD, Ph.D. and VP Administration Atty. Joan S. Largo, Ll.M., who both expressed their gratitude for Mr. Sola’s generosity. They highlighted how contributions like his directly impact students’ lives, giving them not just opportunities but also hope for a better future.

For Mr. Sola, this act of giving carries deep personal meaning. “I believe education has the power to change lives,” he shared during the ceremony. “Through this support, I hope to help young students reach their full potential and create better futures for themselves and their families.”

officials emphasized that Mr. Sola’s generosity reflects the heart of the University’s mission—Scientia, Virtus, and Devotio. They underscored the importance of partnerships like this in sustaining ’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development.

Students interested in applying for financial assistance under the program are encouraged to contact the Office of Alumni Affairs, Scholarships, and Job Placement via scholarship@usc.edu.ph for more information.

The scholarship grant is just one aspect of the partnership between and Megawide. The two parties have also discussed expanding the program to include scholarships and/or internship opportunities for engineering and business students at the University of San Carlos.

“We’d like to provide these opportunities to the students, not only for architecture, but also for engineering and business. We have different opportunities and we can work with them. We can teach them and expose them to industry practice and standards at an early stage,” Ferrer shared.

The University of San Carlos, represented by Fr. President Francisco Antonio T. Estepa, SVD, and Carolinian alumni Joseto Joet Marquez Reoma, Lillian Cui Garcia, and Atty. Anastacio Muntuerto Jr., signed a Memorandum of Agreement establishing the Fr. Wilhelm Flieger Scholarship on March 1 and 5, 2025, respectively, at the Downtown Campus.

Lilian Cui Garcia (2nd from left, top photo), Atty. Anastacio Muntuerto Jr. (3rd from left, top photo), and Joseto Joet Marquez Reoma (left, bottom photo), signed a memorandum of agreement with establishing the Fr. Wilhelm Flieger Scholarship.

According to Mrs. Garcia, they were inspired by the greatness and kindness of Fr. Flieger, the founder of the Office of Population Studies Foundation, Inc. (OPSFI) and one of the pioneering demographers in the country, who also established the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and History (DASH).

Fr. Flieger was a world-class demographer who mentored many students, including Atty. Muntuerto and Mr. Reoma, as well as his faculty, such as Mrs. Garcia, helping them become successful professionals in their chosen fields.

Thus, to pay tribute to Fr. Flieger’s brilliance, the benefactors decided to preserve his legacy by establishing a scholarship program in his honor, supporting deserving students in the Department he founded.

The scholarship will be offered through the Office of Alumni Affairs, Scholarships, and Job Placement (OAASJP) to academically high-performing students in financial need enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology program. In addition to maintaining good academic standing, recipients must also be involved in co-curricular and/or extracurricular activities and participate in community service or civic extension programs.

When asked why they chose to come back and establish the grant, Mrs. Garcia answered, “Because we have a sense of gratitude for people like Fr. Flieger who have helped us arrive at where we are now.”

Through the scholarship, Mrs. Garcia, Atty. Mutuerto, and Mr. Reoma also want to give the next generation of Carolinians a chance to go where they have been—or perhaps even further.
