The University of San Carlos, through the Department of Nursing, proudly participated in the 23rd National Conference for Nursing Students held on October 5, 2025, at Tent City in the Manila Hotel.

Led by Department Chair Janine Requina, R.N., M.A.N., J.D., nursing students from the University of San Carlos took part in the prestigious national convention organized by the Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN). Guided by the theme Transforming Nursing Education: Advancing Practice, Strengthening Primary Health Care, Enriching Clinical and Community Experience,” the event highlighted the dynamic shifts in nursing education and the profession’s vital role in advancing healthcare delivery in the Philippines.

Representing were BSN 4 students Irah Maxine Dacuycuy, Johanna Cherrie Caballes, and Maxine Alessandra Pabracuer, who presented their research on the “Lived Experience of Family Caregivers for Patients with Chronic Illnesses.” Their study was chosen as one of 120 finalists out of 256 participating nursing schools nationwide—an accomplishment that reflects the department’s growing reputation in nursing research and education.

The students’ work shed light on the emotional and practical challenges faced by family caregivers, highlighting the importance of empathy, resilience, and community in the care continuum. Their research underscores the University’s mission to integrate knowledge and compassion in addressing real-world health concerns.

This achievement reaffirms the Department of Nursing’s commitment to excellence and innovation, exemplifying the Carolinian spirit of service, scholarship, and care in the field of nursing.

Faculty members Professor Masami Sase and Professor Nami Harada together with students Nayuka Ichikawa, Sorika Asanuma, Yurika Yamano, and Roi Kurabayashi met with Nursing students and faculty members from .

Their visit not only highlighted cultural exchange but also facilitated an enriching exploration of nursing education, healthcare systems, and practical experiences in both Japan and the Philippines.

Their first day of visit commenced with a meet and greet, allowing both parties to establish rapport. This was followed by detailed presentations of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curricula and the healthcare systems of Japan and the Philippines which fostered a deeper understanding of the contextual distinction of our nursing education and nursing practices.

The delegates also participated in our Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory and the Fundamentals of Nursing RLE classes.

Toho University students and professors joined a Fundamentals of Nursing RLE class.

The Japanese student delegates engaged in learning activities alongside the Carolinian students, facilitating mutual learning and fostering camaraderie and collaboration among aspiring nurses from diverse backgrounds.

Community Visit at Barangay Guba

The delegates also embarked on a community visit to Barangay Guba, underscoring the importance of community-oriented healthcare. This learning opportunity enabled the delegates to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities prevalent in community healthcare delivery.

Through collaborative engagement with local healthcare professionals and community leaders, the delegates were able to observe firsthand the pivotal role of public health nurses and community health volunteers in promoting health equity and addressing community-specific health concerns.

Hospital Tours at PSH and VSMMC

The culminating day of the visit featured their hospital tours at Perpetual Succour Hospital (PSH) and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC). These tours provided the delegates the opportunity to observe clinical practices, healthcare protocols, and patient care processes within the Philippine healthcare setting.

TU delegates during their tour at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) together with 3rd year BSN students at the Neurosurgery Ward.

The School of Health Care Professions (SHCP) launched its first-ever Interprofessional Education (IPE) event on September 7-8, 2023 at the Nursing Arts Laboratory, Robert Hoeppener Building, Talamban Campus, Cebu City.

Dean Gerard Lee L. See, Ph.D. (4th from left) led the simulated hospital shift on the first day of the IPE.

The two-day event aimed at fostering interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among the three departments under SHCP, namely Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Pharmacy.

During the IPE, students and faculty members from the three departments underwent a simulated eight-hour hospital shift from patient admission, course in the wards, until discharge. There was also a simulation of different patient cases allowing students to create assessments and identify interventions that can be applied to other healthcare fields.

Interprofessional education refers to the process by which a group of students from varying disciplines learn together during certain periods of their education.

The World Health Organization has firmly placed interprofessional education on the global health agenda, where it is recognized as a necessary component of every health professional’s education.

As a teaching-learning strategy, IPE allows the sharing and integration of knowledge to create a more holistic approach to care for the patient.

SHCP is now looking at conducting the event annually after it gained positive feedback from both students and faculty members. As planned, the IPE will be conducted before the start of the actual field exposure for students to enable them to become more familiar with the processes and set-up of an actual hospital environment.

Participants from the three SHCP departments pose at the conclusion of the IPE 2023 event.

Dean Gerard Lee L. See, Ph.D. organized the event along with the IPE Core Team comprised of faculty members of the three departments, namely Jacqueline T. Pableo, M.A.N., and Joy Barby L. Alota, M.A.N. (Department of Nursing), Micah M. Areja, R.Ph. (Department of Pharmacy), Raphalella Therese C. Lavisores, and Rey Francis M. Erana (Department of Nutrition and Dietetics).
