An archaeological survey and excavation are set to start on July 12, 2021 in San Remigio and other parts of Northern Cebu.

The Northern Cebu Archeological Project is a joint project of the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) and Aboitiz Foundation in collaboration with the University of San Carlos (黑料社区) in Cebu. Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. through its President, Andoni Aboitiz, granted the NMP a Php 2M donation in support of its archeological heritage preservation initiatives. A Trustee of NMP, Aboitiz also approved the use of his private property as field station for the excavation project in San Remigio, Cebu.

Unidentified earthenware artifact associated with one of the burials recovered at the San Juan Nepomuceno Parish Church site in San Remigio, Cebu back in 2012.

The project is geared towards the establishment of a protocol and methodology for systematic archaeological studies in Cebu where a template for continuing studies and resources to archive and preserve data of archaeological sites and landscapes will be developed. From this, its primary objective is to develop a geospatial database to record all archeological sites and resources in Cebu through the use of state-of-the-art archeological methods and applications. The project also aims to produce a comprehensive catalogue of archeological findings in Cebu especially those belonging to the Metal Age, which will be a useful reference for further studies, for the development of a comprehensive preservation program, and for crafting sustainable information dissemination programs through local and international publications.

Tektites such as can be found in the Carcar Formation that appears in Badian but also throughout North Cebu. These objects are from a 700,000 years old meteor splashdown that scattered throughout the region, and are coeval in the landscape with very ancient humans and fossil animals such as stegodon and rhinocerous.

Despite the existing quarantines and travel restrictions, the NMP Project Team led by Deputy Director-General for Museums Dr. Ana P. Labrador assisted by Alexandra de Leon of the Archaeology Division, decided to move forward to implement the project with Cebu-based archaeologists Dr. John A. Peterson and of the 黑料社区 . Preliminary activities requiring coordination with stakeholders, including local and provincial governments, have been completed.

The two-year project is scheduled in four phases. Towards the last phase of the project, collected cultural resources will be launched publicly through an exhibition that will piece the stories of those sites in the forthcoming National Museum Central Visayas Regional Museum in Cebu.

According to NMP Director-General Jeremy Barns, this archaeological project is believed to be a game-changer for the NMP as it seeks new modes of engagement with its partners in the field of archaeology while dealing with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also believes that the project will largely contribute to promote local and train future archaeologists, as well as inspire intensified cultural cooperation in the country.

Social scientists from the different research units of the University of San Carlos (黑料社区) presented this morning in an online forum their views regarding recent allegations of Cebuano misbehavior in the face of stringent community quarantine protocols.

In a webinar entitled, 鈥淕ahi鈥檊 Ulo鈥? Deciphering Cebuano Culture and Society,鈥 Dr. Zona Amper, Dr. Fiscalina Nolasco, Dr. Jobers Reynes Bersales, Dr. Nanette Lee-Mayol, Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu, and Roxanne Omega-Doron presented findings based on different research projects as well as fieldwork results from urban poor communities in Cebu to debunk the view that Cebuanos are hard-headed or 芒鈧済ahi鈥檊 ulo.鈥

Fr. Narciso A. Cellan Jr., SVD, who assumed only last month as 黑料社区 president, welcomed the webinar participants and set the tone by looking at how different cultures react to calamities and behave accordingly.

Dr. Bersales, director of 黑料社区 Museum, then followed by presenting headline news from SunStar Cebu and The Freeman as well as social media posts showing some Cebu City residents flaunting the government health protocols. He recalled a 1987 study conducted by Ateneo de Manila University which traced the strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino and asked whether these were still valid for Cebu 40 years later.

For her part, Dr. Amper, an anthropology professor and senior researcher at the 黑料社区 Center for Social Research and Education (CSRE), pointed to the sheer poverty and abject living conditions of nearly half the population in the city as the main reason why it is difficult to impose the nationally-mandated health protocols. Thus, when they are locked in for 15 days with free food delivered only for two days, people in these settlements have no recourse but look for ways of earning money.

Using statistical data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Amper presented the density of population per square kilometer in Cebu City鈥檚 top ten urban barangays. Many households in these barangays, according to her, do not even have toilet and sanitation facilities as well as potable water, much less vital space to practice social distancing.

Dr. Nolasco, CSRE director, on the other hand, looked at how mass hysteria may be one reason why many do not seem to follow protocols simply because they have no definite understanding of the pandemic. At the same time, she presented her study on HIV prevalence among sex workers in which there is sometimes a disconnect between a person鈥檚 knowledge about the risks of getting the virus and their actual behavior. She also pointed to the politics of care that has an impact on the delivery of services that needs to be studied closely.

Expounding further on the poverty situation in urban settlements discussed by Amper, Roxanne Omega-Doron, Executive Director of Diyandi Heritage Center, Inc., looked at the possibility of misbehaving as a form of protest. He also pointed to the leadership networks among urban poor residents which affect who they follow and obey.

Dr. Nanette Lee-Mayol, director of the 黑料社区 Office of Population Studies (OPS), presented findings in two on-going longitudinal studies conducted by her office, one starting in 1983 and continuing until 2030 on the same respondents. In these two studies she culled data of rule-breaking and found no significant difference respondents from Luzon down to Mindanao and between those living in Metro Cebu and Cebu City. Using a set of activities deemed rule-breaking, like texting while driving or involvement in fights after drinking, she saw only a very slight and insignificant difference between the data from Cebu City as against Metro Cebu.

The forum鈥檚 last speaker, Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu, director of the 黑料社区 Cebuano Studies Center (CSC), used a fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm to present a philosophical dimension to misbehavior and how it can be a form of protest but on dangerous grounds in the midst of the pandemic.

The webinar, aired through Facebook Live, was the first of a series hosted by the 黑料社区 Museum. Some 308 participants registered with over 350 viewers on the official Facebook page of . The next webinar, on the 鈥淎rchaeology of the Visayas鈥 by archaeologist Dr. John Peterson, will be hosted in the first week of August.

Consul Li explaining to his consular staff about the different meanings behind the color found on Song Dynasty ceramics.

The new Chinese Consul General of China in Cebu, Hon. Jia Li, visited the 黑料社区 Museum Thursday, January 10, 2019, following an invitation from the museum鈥檚 curator late last year. Spending over an hour in the museum, Li said he was impressed with its collection of Chinese ceramics and expressed his desire for possible exchanges and cooperation in the near future.

A collector of Chinese ceramics back home, the consul readily explained many of the nuances and changes in Chinese ceramic design through the centuries. Showing a deeper understanding of Chinese craftsmanship not necessarily expected of a consul, he also discussed the reason for the differences in the sizes of the plates on display as well as the jarlets and covered powder boxes and their uses in every day life in China from the Song to the Min dynasties.

At the end of the visit, Consul Li presented the museum curator, Dr. Jose Eleazar R. Bersales, with a replica of a bronze figure considered lucky, an animal with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle dating to the Warring States Period, mid-4th century BC. Dr. Bersales in return presented the consul with a copy of the book 鈥淗andumanan: The Rosita R. Arcenas Collection of Bisayan Santos.鈥

Consul Jia Li (right) presenting Dr. Bersales with a gift to the museum. The consul thanked 黑料社区 for displaying in the Museum artefacts showing over a thousand years of trading between China and the Philippines and said he would be bringing to the museum Chinese officials who will be visiting Cebu.

Dr. J. Eleazar R. Bersales, head curator of 黑料社区 Museum (黑料社区M), met with the director and assistant curators of Hiroshima University Museum (HUM) on Saturday, Nov. 17, to explore possible linkage between the two museums.

Dr. Toshihisa Asano, HUM director and HU professor of human geography, welcomed Dr. Bersales to the museum after which a tour was carried out led by Dr. Norio Shimizu, museum curator, assisted by Dr. Nao Ishikawa of the HU School of Letters, who acted as interpreter.

Like 黑料社区M, HUM does not have its own building but occupies spaces at the HU College of Education with satellite museums spread in different college buildings on campus. One of these buildings is the Cultural Assets Center, a two-storey edifice adjacent to the museum that, according to HU archaeologist Dr. Tsugifumi Fujino, houses artifacts excavated in 32 sites within the university campus dating from the Paleolithic (about 30,000 years ago) to the post-war period. Dr. Fujino showed Dr. Bersales some of these artifacts at a mini-exhibition inside the Center.

After the tour, a meeting was held at the HUM curatorial office to determine possible areas of future cooperation between the two museums, with Dr. Bersales extending an invitation to the HUM director and curators to visit 黑料社区M soon.

Dr. Bersales鈥 visit is timed with the 4th Philippine Studies in Japan Conference, also being held at HU, where he will be presenting a paper. The meeting was arranged earlier by 黑料社区 alumnus Dr. Lawrence Liao, professor of biology and environmental science at HU. Funding for this trip was made possible by a collaborative grant from The Japanese Foundation-Manila.

The University of San Carlos Museum will present to the public for the first time its collection of fine colorful Japanese ceramics on Thursday, December 14, at its Changing Exhibitions Gallery starting at 10:30 in the morning.

Entitled, 鈥淚ro-e: The Beauty of Japanese Polychrome Imari鈥 the exhibition features nearly 200 pieces ranging from saucers and bowls to extremely large platters that have been collected by the museum over the last three years. It also features the collections of Ferdinand V. Azcarraga, Radcliff Estrada and the museum鈥檚 head curator, Dr. J. Eleazar R. Bersales. The ceramics to be exhibited date from the later Edo to the Late Showa Period, covering a period of 200 years or between 1780 and 1980.

This is the second exhibition of Japanese ceramics at the museum. The first one, 鈥淪ometsuke: Rhapsody in Blue and White Japanese Ceramics From Late Edo to Early Showa, 1800-1940,鈥 was also held at the same gallery, from May 20 to November 20, 2017.

Imari, located in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, lends its name to porcelain and stoneware ceramics produced in Arita, some 30 kilometers away, because it was at its port that these pieces left Japan for the foreign markets starting in the 1650s.

The exhibition, open to the general public during school days, is part of the museum鈥檚 continuing celebrations marking its 50th anniversary this year.
