Lanticse named PATLS Executive Board Member

Cristita L. Lanticse, coordinator of the �� Library and Information Section of the Department of Computer, Information Sciences and Mathematics, was recently named as one of the nine-member Executive Board of the Philippine Association of Teachers of Library Science (PATLS) 2020-2022.

Lanticse, as a B.L.I.S. and M.S. L.I.S. instructor, has been actively involved in the implementation of PATLS activities and advocacies in the education and training of information professionals.

Candida C. Agcaoili, PATLS Founding President back in 1964, described the nationwide professional organization to be “in the forefront of library education in the Philippines. Its members are all seasoned L.I.S. teachers, but more so because more of them are acknowledged leaders in the field of Philippine Librarianship. There is no doubt, therefore, that the Association will remain the undisputed wellspring of wisdom and enlightenment in the library profession in our country.”

Induction of the members of the Executive Board will be on March 31, 2020 during the annual General Assembly in Manila.

Nine new Carolinian librarians hurdle licensure exam

The University of San Carlos and the Library and Information Science Section congratulate the successful Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.S.) graduates who passed the Librarian Licensure Examination held last September 10 and 11, 2019. �� posted an overall passing average of 69.23% (9 out of 13) with first-time takers notching a passing of 77.78% (7 out 9). The national passing average was only 55.18% or 565 out of 1,024 examinees.

Information Science now DOST SEI priority program

An Information Scientist is actually a new term for a librarian. To keep up with the lightning speed of information in the digital age, the University of San Carlos is offering a streamlined version of the Bachelor of Library and Information Science degree.

Information, next to time, is a precious commodity. Yes, information is everywhere—on road signs, in books, in cellphones, and in the ubiquitous Internet. Everyone is supposed to be information literate with the use of one’s eyes to read not just the text but the whole picture. Reading is part of getting information from varied sources. The ability to bridge the information and its varied sources requires training and skills. There are individuals who are able to operate in, contribute to, and enhance the theory and practice in information-seeking. These persons help in research and the generation of new knowledge. These are the information scientists, the librarians.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is looking for poor, talented, and deserving students who might be interested to become information scientists. These students may be accepted as DOST scholars in the Library and Information Science Section of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences of the University of San Carlos.

Student applicants for the DOST scholarship for the degree Bachelor of Library and Information Science must be members of the STEM strand in Senior High School, should provide proof of residency of their municipality or city for the last four years attested by their barangay chairman, and of good moral character and in good health.

When they qualify and pass the DOST’s 2020 S&T Scholarship Examination, they get free tuition and other school fees per Academic Year (AY), book allowance, MS/PE uniform, Group Insurance Premium, transportation allowance (for those studying outside of their home province), monthly living allowance, summer allowance (if required per curriculum), and graduation clothing allowance.

Interested senior high school students may visit the DOST Region VII office or Library and Information Science Section of the University of San Carlos for further details.

Alumna is 3rd place in librarian exam

Frances Riscel S. Padin (above) placed 3rd with a rating of 88.4% in the Librarian Licensure Examination held last September 18 and 19, 2018 in nine cities all over the Philippines.

Five other �� graduates also hurdled the examination giving the University a 75% (6 out of 8) passing for first-time takers and 66.67% overall. This is still considerably better than the national passing, which is only 49% with only 466 out of 951 examinees successfully completing the examinations.

Burdeos receives James J. Meany award

Nelia K. Burdeos, former chair/coordinator of the Library and Information Science Section, received the James J. Meany, S.J. Award for 100 survey visits and consultancies. The awarding was given during the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) General Assembly and Conferring of Awards to Accreditors, which took place on November 27, 2017 at the Novotel Manila Araneta Center, Quezon City, Philippines.

The citation, signed by PAASCU President Fr. Joel E. Tabora, S.J., reads in full:

The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities presents the James J. Meany Award to Nelia K. Burdeos in recognition of her unwavering pursuit of quality in Basic Education and her selfless commitment to accreditation in the Philippines. She has served in over a hundred survey visits and consultancies.

A strong advocate of accreditation, she has sowed the seeds of academic excellence throughout the country and assisted schools in their continuing quest for quality.

Former �� President Fr. Mar Alingasa, SVD, sent Burdeos to an accreditors’ training back in December 1982. Burdeos recently retired as coordinator of the Library and Information Science section, which was recently attached to the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. She has a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education from Mindanao State University in Marawi City and a master’s degree in Library Science from ��. As a librarian, she taught library skills integrated in English, Science, Social Studies and other subjects in collaboration with the high school teachers. Before her retirement, she has co-authored a work/textbook for Senior High School entitled, Think, Click and Share: A Comprehensive Worktext in Media and Information Literacy.
