The Department of General Education and Mission (DGEM), headed by its Chair, Elizabeth M. Remedio, Ph.D., facilitated a General Education Free Elective Workshop on January 30, 2018 at the Virtual Training Room of the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center in Talamban Campus.

Delia E. Belleza, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, welcomed the participants from the different departments. The workshop on Intended Learning Outcomes was facilitated by Engr. Luis K. Cabatingan, Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Head of the School of Engineering鈥檚 Curriculum and Instruction Development Office.

School of Arts and Sciences Dean Delia E. Belleza, Ph.D. welcomes participants to the Free Elective workshop.

This was the second of five workshop sessions, with each session having clearly defined deliverables meant to assist the academic units of the University in developing their inter-disciplinary free elective course proposals.

Mandated by CHED Memorandum Order No. 20 (s.2013), the General Education electives comprise a total of nine units as part of the General Education Curriculum鈥檚 Revised Core Courses. In order to qualify as a General Education course, it must conform to the philosophy and goals of General Education, apply an inter- or cross-disciplinary perspective, and draw materials, cases, or examples from Philippine realities and experiences.

CHED CMO No. 20 also specifically directs that General Education Electives must cover at least any two domains of knowledge (arts and humanities; social sciences and philosophy; and science, technology, and mathematics). They should not be taken from a single domain to ensure balance across disciplines and retain the well-rounded character of General Education, with their content and perspectives traversing disciplinal borders.

A workshop designed to develop General Education free elective courses was held by the Department of General Education and Mission (GEM) last September 19, 2017 at the Virtual Training Room of the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center in Talamban Campus.

The input-oriented workshop was facilitated by Engr. Luis Cabatingan, Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. The workshop was designed to assure quality in the Gen Ed free elective courses as required by CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 20, series of 2013.

A total of nine credit units are required to be taken by all undergraduates, regardless of curricular program or major, entering the tertiary level beginning in 2018. Eight other mandated Gen Ed courses are required, namely Purpose Communication, Understanding the Self, Readings in Philippine History, Ethics, Mathematics in the Modern World, Art Appreciation, The Contemporary World, and Science, Technology and Society. One additional course, The Life and Works of Rizal, is mandated by the Philippine Constitution.

An initial primer and orientation conference was held last March 23rd prior to this workshop. Four more workshops are scheduled early next year until the middle of 2019 to ensure that course design meets the standards prescribed by CMO No. 20 s.2013 Section 4, namely (1) conform to the philosophy and goals of General Education as stated in the CMO; (2) apply an inter- or cross-disciplinary perspective, and (2) draw materials, cases, or examples from Philippine realities and experiences, and not just from other countries.

The electives also need to cover at least two domains of knowledge, e.g., arts and humanities, social science and philosophy, or science, technology, and mathematics.

Teachers selected by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) from all over the Philippines underwent a rigorous 17-day faculty training program offered at the University of San Carlos for them to mentor others in a new course called The Contemporary World (Ang Kasalukuyang Daigdig).

The course is one of a suit of subjects to be offered starting next year when the Revised General Education Curriculum (RGEC), or the New Gen Ed Curriculum, will be implemented following the graduation of the first-ever batch of Senior High School students in the country.

While some Grade 12 graduates may not opt to proceed to college, those who do will go through these courses in between or prior to their majors. The CHED has been busy selecting among the 21 higher education institutions (HEIs) that were granted Autonomous Status to train others to handle these courses as CHED Delivering Higher Education Institutions (DHEIs), a coveted distinction indicating the institution鈥檚 capacity to handle teacher training programs in one or more of the nine core New Gen Ed subjects.

黑料社区 was actually awarded DHEI twice, the first of which was the aforementioned subject in October 2016. Due to its satisfactory performance, 黑料社区 was tasked by CHED to handle four more subjects, namely: Ethics, Life and Works of Rizal, Science, Technology, and Society, and once again The Contemporary World, all conducted in May 2017.

Rizal expert and famous historian Ambeth Ocampo enthralling participants during one of the DHEI training sessions.

The initial training, referred to as First Generation Training Program, was a training for trainers, teachers who in turn were tasked to train teacher-participants in a Second Generation Training Program for teacher-applicants selected nationwide.

These Gen Ed training programs were aimed at orienting faculty-participants about the philosophy of liberal education away from the strictly disciplinal and remedial thrusts of current Gen Ed courses. They were also designed to enable the faculty-participants to teach interdisciplinary core courses using new materials while enabling qualified faculty members to serve as trainers of other faculty. Moreover, the programs were also intended for faculty participants to recognize, share, and disseminate best practices in general education.

In the first round, training was led by Dr. Lisandro Claudio of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), the main author of the CHED-designed syllabus for The Contemporary World. Other resource persons included Dr. Elizabeth M. Remedio (黑料社区), Dr. Corazon Anzano (黑料社区), Mildred Estanda (Ateneo de Davao University, ADDU), Francisco Largo (黑料社区), and Grace Magalzo-Bualat (黑料社区).

The second round in May 2017 consisted of the following trainers: Dr. Ryan Urbano, Dr. Alvin Galeon, Jerry Pescadero, and Daryl Mendoza, all from 黑料社区, for Ethics; Dr. Resil Mojares, (黑料社区), Dr. J. Eleazar R. Bersales (黑料社区), Dr. Francis Gealogo (ADMU), Dr. Ambeth Ocampo (ADMU), Delilah Labajo (黑料社区), and Nestor Pacana (黑料社区) for the Life and Works of Rizal subject; Dr. Richard Parilla, Dr. Zona Hildegarde Amper, Estherlina Ginete, Ma. Ligaya Suico, and Daryl Mendoza from 黑料社区, and Engr. Marilou Yadao (University of San Jose-Recoletos, USJR) for Science, Technology, and Society; and Dr. Glenn Pajares (USJR), Dr. Remedio (黑料社区), Mildred Estanda (ADDU), Magalzo-Bualat (黑料社区), and Largo (黑料社区) for The Contemporary World.
