The University of San Carlos (黑料社区) marks a triumphant start to 2026 as its Department of Architecture continues its legacy of academic distinction, producing two topnotchers and achieving a near-perfect institutional passing rate in the January 2026 Architects Licensure Examination (ALE).

Setting the pace for the next generation of Filipino architects are two recent graduates who secured spots in the prestigious top 10, namely Johann Lance Nalo (7th place, 87.70%) and Raia Jillian Alcantara (9th place, 87.50%).

In a demonstration of the Carolinian standard of sustained excellence, the University posted an impressive 96.43% passing rate, with 27 out of 28 examinees successfully hurdling the rigorous two-day national board exam. This performance stands significantly above the national passing average of 82.09%, where 1,998 out of 2,434 examinees across the country qualified for licensure.

The success of these 27 new professionals is a shared victory. The University extends its deepest gratitude to the mentors, families, and friends whose unwavering support provided the foundation for this remarkable journey.

A team of third-year architecture students from the University of San Carlos secured 2nd place in the Projeto Ideas and Design Competition Cebu Edition 2025. The awarding took place during the Philippine Building Exposition (PHILBEX) held at the Waterfront Cebu Hotel and Casino on September 14, 2025.

The 黑料社区 Architecture Team composed of (starting 3rd from left) Chris Alister Bayno, Rina Te, Dyshell Claire Gementiza, Jodi Gabrianne Soriano, and Patrick Luis Abellana with the jury received their certificates and prizes.

The team, composed of Patrick Luis Abellana, Chris Alister Bayno, Dyshell Claire Gementiza, Jodi Gabrianne Soriano and Rina Jane Te, gained the judge鈥檚 nod for their design entry entitled 鈥淗akbayan,鈥 a proposed cultural mixed-use building. The design proposal, which was presented in front of a panel of judges, revolved around the preservation of cultural identity while addressing contemporary issues in the community.

The students presented their work before a panel of judges, who commended the team for weaving together tradition and modern solutions.

Projeto is a national interschool competition that showcases innovative ideas from architecture and design students across the Philippines. 黑料社区 has consistently made its mark in the contest, having previously won the grand prize in 2023 (see related story here).

Three faculty members of the University of San Carlos Department of Architecture were awarded among the 鈥50 Distinguished Architects in UAP District C1鈥 by the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Regional District C1 on June 20, 2025 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City.

UAP Sugbu Chapter awardees pose for posterity after the awarding ceremony.

Architects Jensen M. Racho, Carmencita M. Solis, and Karl Aries Emerson F. Cabilao received the prestigious recognition. 

Ar. Racho was awarded for his exemplary professional works as both architect and engineer, as well as his community involvements and leadership roles in various professional and socio-civic clubs while Ar. Solis was recognized for her almost 30 years in the academe as well as her work in heritage conservation and urban planning. Meanwhile, Ar. Cabilao (see photo below) was recognized for his work in the academe as well as in architectural journalism, which helped 鈥渋n advancing architectural discourse鈥 both in the university and the community.

The 鈥50 Distinguished Architects of UAP District C1鈥 recognized architects who belong to various UAP Chapters in Cebu, Bohol, and Dumaguete for their notable contributions to the advancement of the architecture profession, laudable service to the professional organization, and admirable work in the community.

The event, which was part of the PhilConstruct 2025 exposition, was organized by the UAP Regional District C1 in line with the year-long 50th anniversary celebration of the UAP, which is the integrated and accredited professional organization of architects in the country.聽

The 黑料社区 School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Design (SAFAD) hosted the 17th Annual Conference on Architectural Research and Education (ACARE) on October 28鈥29, 2024, at the SAFAD Theater, Talamban Campus. 

黑料社区 Department of Architecture hosted the ACARE 2024 conference on October 28-29, 2024.

The two-day research conference served as a venue for scholars and architectural practitioners to present various studies in relation to the design and built environment, such as architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, and the allied fields. 

This year’s theme, “Shaping Sustainable Futures: Creative, Resilient and Sustainable Built Space” delved into what sustainability in architecture means for the academe, the students, and the broader Philippine society.

Ar. Adrian Yap, M.S., chair of the 黑料社区 Department of Architecture, is this year’s event chair. Meanwhile, the following Architecture faculty members were among the presenters:

The University of San Carlos, through the School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Design (SAFAD), entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the (PAEF) on October 7, 2024, in 黑料社区 Talamban Campus. 

Under the MOU, the parties will work together to 鈥渆stablish a general framework to foster a bilateral relationship through mutual cooperation in teaching, research, and extension activities between 黑料社区 and PAEF.鈥

Also known as the Fulbright Commission, PAEF is a non-profit, binational organization that administers the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the United States of America in the Philippines. 

In line with this, the Fulbright-黑料社区 partnership will focus on enhancing faculty research and teaching engagement; establishing joint research activities; and exploring the possibility of scholarships, training programs, and educational exchanges.

The University of San Carlos will also be given the opportunity to join a PAEF-led consortium of higher education institutions that will engage and participate in study abroad programs, promoting cross-cultural and educational exchanges between the Philippines and the United States.

Ar. Clint Freidrich Arevalo Josol, a graduate of the 黑料社区 Department of Architecture, placed 9th with a rating of 81.60% during the June 2024 Licensure Examination for Architects.

With 58 passers, the University of San Carlos ranked 3rd nationwide among top-performing schools with 50 or more examinees and with at least 80% passing percentage. 黑料社区 achieved an 85.29% passing rate, significantly higher than the national average of 62.14%. 

Nationwide, a total of 2,094 out of 3,370 examinees passed the board.

The University of San Carlos entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Balay Samaritano sa Sugbo on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (SAFAD) lobby.

The MOA formalized the partnership for the interior renovation of Balay Samaritano sa Sugbo (Samaritan House of Cebu), a 鈥渄rop-in shelter for the homeless people living in the streets of Cebu City,鈥 providing temporary shelter, food assistance, medical care, and educational support to children and elderly. 

The interior renovation project entitled 鈥Dayon Kamo: A Proposed Interior Renovation for Balay Samaritano in Cebu City supported by Third Place Theory鈥 started with the creation of a research-based approach in design of the Balay Samaritano which was initiated by a batch of graduating students of Bachelor of Science in Interior Design last May 2023. Damon Kamo is a common Cebuano greeting roughly translated as, 鈥渨elcome, come in.鈥

This year, Phase 1 construction includes the renovation of two classrooms and two offices which is made possible through the initiative and team effort of 19 fourth-year students with the guidance of their mentors in the Interior Design Program under the course IN4200 Special Projects.

The MOA signing was led by Bachelor of Science in Interior Design students and hosted by the Dayon Kamo project managers, John Brix Cruza and Jan Marie Trocino. The Dayon Kamo project is an embodiment of the Carolinian core value, Devotio

The signatories are joined by 黑料社区 administrators and representatives from Balay Samaritano sa Sugbo.

By extending a helping hand through partnership and commitment, the students of the University of San Carlos are able to manifest the Carolinian devotion.

Architect and landscape architect Ar. Ryan Antony Cabanlit, a faculty member of the Department of Architecture attended a series of workshops and conferences from April 17鈥26, 2024, in Hungary and Croatia. 

The events were part of the bilateral academic exchange and teaching cooperation between MATE Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the University of San Carlos.

Ar. Cabanlit participated in the following activities: 

  • Student workshop at MATE Hungarian University (Buda Campus)
  • 鈥淕arden Heritage in Tourism, Tourism in Gardens Conference鈥 by Heritage Garden Foundation in Budapest, Hungary
  • 鈥淚nternational Conference: Smart Landscape 2 鈥 Renewable and Sustainable鈥 organized by the Croatian Association of Landscape Architects (CALA) in Zagreb, Croatia.

Ar. Cabanlit鈥檚 participation was made possible through the assistance of Br. Bela Lanyi, SVD, who facilitated the MATE coordination and visa application; former SAFAD Dean Ar. Margret D. Rosario, FUAP, who established the international linkages for the Landscape Architecture program; and SAFAD Dean Dr. Adrian P. del Monte Ph.D. and Department of Architecture Chair Ar. Adrian Yap, M.S. who provided support and made the exchange possible.
